NEBRASKA SUMMER FOOD SERVICE PROGRAM
As we approach the end of a school year and beginning of summer break, we know access to the school nutrition program’s daily nutritious school meals offered to students will change. The Summer Food Service Program operates at approved sites in eligible locations each summer; this program can help meet children’s nutrition needs when school is out for summer.
The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) is a free summer food service provided by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) ¹. Here are the details of the program ²:
– *Eligibility*: Children aged 18 and under are eligible to receive free meals during the summer months at participating program sites.
– *Participating Sites*: Meals are served at sites located in areas with significant concentrations of children from low-income families.
– *Meals*: All meals and snacks served through the SFSP must meet federal nutrition standards, and require servings of grains, proteins, fruits and vegetables, and milk.
– *How to find a site*:
USDA’s Summer Food Service Program Outreach can be posted on websites, newsletters and/or flyers to parents.
Check out Nebraska’s Summer Food Service Program. The program which provides free summer meals to kids and teens (ages 1 – 18) may be available in your area at select locations. The meals help ensure children continue to receive nutritious meals when school is out for the summer. There are many open summer meal sites throughout the state of Nebraska. Call 2-1-1 or text FOOD to 877-877. Visit http://www.fns.usda.gov/summerfoodrocks or http://www.education.ne.gov/NS/SFSP/index.html
